| Bilsdale is made up of open, undulating countryside, surrounded by woodland slopes and wild moorland. The dale reputedly got its name from William the Conqueror, who passed this way on route to York in 1069, during his 'Harrying of the North' campaign, but Bilsdale is more likely to be the corruption of a Viking name. |
