Byland Abbey

Byland Abbey ruins

The CD has (approx) 3 pages about Byland Abey.
Byland Abbey is 1 mile from Coxwold towards Ampleforth. It was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1177 and its church had a larger floor area than either Fountains or Rievaulx . The west end had an unusually large circular window and the church has the best example in Europe of floor tiles (in situ) from that period. Tradition says that the monks first settled at Old Byland, but were confused by the sound of bells from nearby Rievaulx, and so moved here.
