Dalby Forest is about 5 miles east of Pickering, covering an area roughly five miles long by four wide. It is the property of the Forestry Commission and the tourist facility is managed by Forest Enterprise. Although it is a working forest, with a full programme of planting and felling, much of the forest is open to the public. There is a 9 mile forest drive (toll £4 in 2002), with numerous car parks and picnic spots along the route. At Low Dalby, next to the village, is a Visitors' Centre, with full information about the forest's attractions. Cyclists and walkers are guided over way-marked routes and other facilities include a bird hide, adventure playgrounds and barbecue sites. The forest has a great variety of landscapes: tree clad slopes and woodland clearings; streams and the lake at Staindale water; the spectacular sandstone outcrops on Bridestones Moor (maintained by The National Trust) |
