Helmsley is a small market town midway between Thirsk and Pickering on the A170. In the market square, often crowded with parked cars, is an elaborate monument, surrounded by shops and hotels. Borough Beck runs through the town and joins the River Rye to the south. Overlooking the town to the west is the ruined 12th century castle and a mile away is Duncombe Park estate. St. Matthew's Church dominates the skyline from several points.
