| Old Byland is about 5 miles west of Helmsley, reached via a minor road which passes close to Rievaulx Abbey. Three minor roads lead off to the west, all ending up at Sutton Bank. This road takes a detour through the village, which is built around four sides of a large square green. The houses front directly onto the green, with little space allowed for front gardens. This contrasts with Cold Kirby, two miles away, where the green has been mainly enclosed. |
