Rievaulx Abbey was the first Cistercian monastery in Yorkshire, founded by Walter l'Espec in 1131. The buildings which remain were completedin the 14th century and at the height of its prosperity there were 140 monks and possibly 600 lay workers. Many of these were employed in a variety of industries run by the abbey. These included iron mining and smelting and farming in the surrounding valleys and hill slopes.
