| Rosedale is a steep valley about seven miles long, flanked on the east by Wheeldale Moor and Cropton Forest, and to the west by Blakey Ridge, carrying the Castleton to Hutton-le-Hole road. Its head splits into two, with Rosedale east visible here. There was a Cistercian Monastery at Rosedale Abbey in medieval times and between 1855 and 1925 the population rose to 3000 during an iron mining boom but has since fallen away to around 300. |
