Gormire is one of the few truly natural lakes in Yorkshire.
It is roughly semicircular in shape with a diameter of about
¼mile running along the bottom of the escarpment. Gormire Rigg is a glacial feature
creating a bowl shape behind the lake. There are no streams in or out of the lake, but springs emerge
on the far side of Gormire Rigg near High Cleaves Farm (centre). The lake is almost surrounded by the dense
forest of Garbutt Wood.
