| The White Horse measures 325 feet by 225 feet and
was marked out by local teacher John Hodgson and his
pupils in 1857 and cut by local workmen. The idea was to match the
chalk figures found in the Downs in Southern England. The main
problem was the absence of chalk locally. The horse used to be
whitewashed regularly, but now it is given a fresh coating of chalk
chippings brought in from elsewhere. |
